The short version

  • Asked which payment gateway a SaaS startup should use, ChatGPT said it would start with Stripe. Asked for the best payment processor for an online business, it listed Stripe first as "Best overall."
  • Stripe holds 4.2 on G2 from 458 reviews and 1.6 on Trustpilot from 17,536.
  • DataForSEO estimates Stripe's US search visits at about 668,000 in September 2026, down 44% from about 1.18 million a year earlier.

How Stripe shows up on Google

Stripe's backlink rank is 91 out of 100. DataForSEO counts about 120,000 keywords it ranks for in US Google results, about 53,000 on the first page and about 20,000 in the top three, and its model puts current US search visits at about 668,000 a month.

What ChatGPT says

Asked "Which payment gateway should a SaaS startup use to accept card payments?", ChatGPT answered: "For most SaaS startups, I'd start with Stripe." Asked "What is the best payment processor for an online business?", it suggested comparing Stripe, PayPal and Shopify Payments, then listed Stripe first as "Best overall" for custom websites, SaaS and subscriptions.

What customers say

On G2, Stripe Payments averages 4.2 out of 5 from 458 reviews. On Trustpilot, Stripe averages 1.6 from 17,536 reviews. Here the Trustpilot base is about 38 times larger than the G2 one, so the low score carries real weight in the grade.

The number to watch

DataForSEO estimates Stripe's US search visits at about 1.18 million in September 2025 and about 668,000 in September 2026, a fall of 44%. These are modeled estimates rather than Stripe's own analytics, and they don't say which pages lost visibility, so this teardown doesn't claim a cause.

Steal this

What Stripe teaches, written so you can use it on your own business.

  1. Be the default for one clear buyer. ChatGPT's answer for a SaaS startup was a single name, Stripe, which is what owning a segment looks like in an AI answer.
  2. Mind where the volume is. 17,536 Trustpilot reviews at 1.6 outweigh 458 G2 reviews at 4.2 in sheer numbers, so the open review site needs as much attention as the business one.
  3. Track search and AI separately. Stripe's AI position held while its estimated search visits fell by more than two-fifths.

How I graded this

Stripe
Data as of
October 9, 2026
Method
Data gathered October 9, 2026, through the DataForSEO API, for Google in the United States in English. SEO uses DataForSEO's domain overview (keywords ranking in Google's top 10 and top 3, and estimated monthly organic visits) and its backlink rank on a 100-point scale. AI search asks ChatGPT two questions a buyer in the brand's category would ask, through DataForSEO's ChatGPT scraper, and grades whether the brand is named and where it appears. Reviews read the brand's Trustpilot score and review count, gathered through DataForSEO, beside its G2 rating as G2's own listings show it in search results, because the two sites draw different reviewers and a business tool's scores on them can differ sharply. Growth compares DataForSEO's estimate of US organic search visits in September 2026 with September 2025. Those traffic figures are DataForSEO's modeled estimates, not the brand's own analytics, and two prompts are a small sample of what ChatGPT says. Grades run from A (leading its category) through C (ordinary for a brand of this size) to F (a clear weakness).
My relationship with Stripe
I have no relationship with Stripe. It is not a client, partner or affiliate of mine, I hold no investment in it, and nobody paid for this teardown.
