Shopify is ChatGPT's pick for a new store, but estimated search visits fell 77%

ChatGPT names Shopify the best place to start an online store, but DataForSEO estimates its US search visits fell 77% in a year, and Trustpilot rates it 1.3.

Request a teardown

The short version

  • Asked for the best platform to start an online store, ChatGPT said Shopify is the best for most beginners. Asked which ecommerce platform a small business should use, it called Shopify "the best all-around ecommerce platform."
  • Shopify's backlink rank is 96 out of 100, the highest of the seven brands in this series.
  • It holds 4.4 on G2 from about 5,000 reviews and 1.3 on Trustpilot from 5,178.
  • DataForSEO estimates Shopify's US search visits at about 993,000 in September 2026, down 77% from about 4.4 million a year earlier. That is a modeled estimate, and the cause isn't in the data.

How Shopify shows up on Google

Shopify's backlink rank is 96 out of 100, the highest in this series, which means more of the web links to it than to any of the other six. DataForSEO counts about 300,000 keywords it ranks for in US Google results, about 68,000 on the first page and about 19,000 in the top three, and its model puts current US search visits at about 993,000 a month.

What ChatGPT says

Asked "What is the best platform to start an online store?", ChatGPT answered that the best platform "is Shopify for most beginners" and listed Wix, WooCommerce, Squarespace and BigCommerce after it. Asked "Which ecommerce platform should a small business use to sell online?", it said "Shopify is the best all-around ecommerce platform." Both answers put Shopify first without hedging.

What customers say

On G2, Shopify averages 4.4 out of 5 from about 5,000 reviews. On Trustpilot it averages 1.3 from 5,178 reviews. The Trustpilot base here is large, roughly the same size as the G2 one, so the low score can't be waved away as a small sample, and the grade reflects that.

The number to watch

DataForSEO estimates Shopify's US search visits at about 4.4 million in September 2025 and about 993,000 in September 2026, a fall of 77%. That is a very large move for a brand this size, and this teardown can't explain it: the estimate doesn't show which pages lost visibility, and it may partly reflect how DataForSEO models Shopify's site rather than a real loss of visitors. So the growth grade is about the estimate, as the method says, and it would change if Shopify's own numbers showed something different.

Steal this

What Shopify teaches, written so you can use it on your own business.

  1. Authority isn't the same as traffic. Shopify has the strongest backlink profile in this series and still shows the steepest estimated fall, so check where your visits come from, not only how many sites link to you.
  2. Being the AI's default answer is a real asset. ChatGPT named Shopify the best choice twice without hedging, which is worth protecting with pages that keep answering the beginner's question.
  3. Large review bases cut both ways. 5,178 Trustpilot reviews at 1.3 is too many to ignore, so a strong G2 score needs a plan for the other site too.

How I graded this

Brand
Shopify
Data as of
October 9, 2026
Method
Data gathered October 9, 2026, through the DataForSEO API, for Google in the United States in English. SEO uses DataForSEO's domain overview (keywords ranking in Google's top 10 and top 3, and estimated monthly organic visits) and its backlink rank on a 100-point scale. AI search asks ChatGPT two questions a buyer in the brand's category would ask, through DataForSEO's ChatGPT scraper, and grades whether the brand is named and where it appears. Reviews read the brand's Trustpilot score and review count, gathered through DataForSEO, beside its G2 rating as G2's own listings show it in search results, because the two sites draw different reviewers and a business tool's scores on them can differ sharply. Growth compares DataForSEO's estimate of US organic search visits in September 2026 with September 2025. Those traffic figures are DataForSEO's modeled estimates, not the brand's own analytics, and two prompts are a small sample of what ChatGPT says. Grades run from A (leading its category) through C (ordinary for a brand of this size) to F (a clear weakness).
