Canva is the default answer on Google and in ChatGPT, but its search peak has passed

Canva owns the search for design help and ChatGPT recommends it first, but DataForSEO estimates its US search traffic has fallen a quarter since April.

The short version

  • Canva ranks in Google's US top 10 for about 503,000 keywords, and in the top 3 for about 274,000 of them.
  • Asked "What is the best free graphic design tool for non-designers?", ChatGPT's first sentence was that Canva is the best one. Asked which app makes social media graphics quickly, it recommended Canva again.
  • Its reviews hold up on both sites that matter: 4.0 on Trustpilot from 7,668 reviews, and 4.7 on G2.
  • The warning sign is the trend. DataForSEO estimates 13.4 million US search visits in September 2026, down 4% on a year earlier and down 25% from April's 17.95 million.

How big Canva is on Google

DataForSEO counts about 815,000 keywords that Canva ranks for in US Google results. About 503,000 of those rank on the first page, and about 274,000 rank in the top three positions, where most clicks go. Put all of that through DataForSEO's model and it comes to an estimated 13.4 million visits a month from US search alone. Its backlink rank, a measure of how much the rest of the web links to it, is 89 out of 100.

What ChatGPT says

I asked ChatGPT two questions a first-time buyer would ask. For "What is the best free graphic design tool for non-designers?" it answered that "Canva is the best free graphic design tool" and put Adobe Express, Figma and Inkscape behind it. For "Which app should I use to make social media graphics quickly?" it recommended Canva first again, because it is "beginner-friendly, has ready-made templates." Two prompts are a small sample, but both times Canva was the first name in the answer, not one option in a list.

What customers say

Canva scores 4.0 out of 5 from 7,668 reviews on Trustpilot and 4.7 on G2, according to G2's listings. A high score is common for a small product with a few hundred fans. It's much rarer to hold a 4.0 across thousands of reviews from a user base this broad.

The number to watch

By DataForSEO's estimate, Canva's US search visits peaked at about 17.95 million in April 2026 and had fallen to 13.4 million by September. That is a 25% drop in five months, and it brings Canva back to roughly where it was a year earlier. These are modeled estimates rather than Canva's own analytics, and DataForSEO's figures don't say why the number moved. Even so, the biggest brand in its category can lose a quarter of its estimated search traffic in a season, which makes the trend worth watching more closely than the total.

Steal this

What Canva teaches, written so you can use it on your own business.

  1. Answer the beginner's question in the beginner's words. ChatGPT explained its pick of Canva with "ready-made templates" and "drag-and-drop," which is how a non-designer describes the job. Describe your product in your buyer's words, not your own.
  2. Collect reviews where your buyers read them. A 4.0 on Trustpilot and a 4.7 on G2 send the same message from two directions, and the volume behind them is what makes either one believable.
  3. Watch the monthly trend, not the size. Canva's total looks unbeatable, yet the estimate fell by a quarter in five months, so track the direction every month.

How I graded this

Brand
Canva
Data as of
October 9, 2026
Method
Data gathered October 9, 2026, through the DataForSEO API, for Google in the United States in English. SEO uses DataForSEO's domain overview (keywords ranking in Google's top 10 and top 3, and estimated monthly organic visits) and its backlink rank on a 100-point scale. AI search asks ChatGPT two questions a buyer in the brand's category would ask, through DataForSEO's ChatGPT scraper, and grades whether the brand is named and where it appears. Reviews read the brand's Trustpilot score and review count, gathered through DataForSEO, beside its G2 rating as G2's own listings show it in search results, because the two sites draw different reviewers and a business tool's scores on them can differ sharply. Growth compares DataForSEO's estimate of US organic search visits in September 2026 with September 2025. Those traffic figures are DataForSEO's modeled estimates, not the brand's own analytics, and two prompts are a small sample of what ChatGPT says. Grades run from A (leading its category) through C (ordinary for a brand of this size) to F (a clear weakness).
